SUCCESS STORY OF COMMUNITY FARMING

I. Of Community Farming

In Satara region, all villages are situated in the wildlife reserve forest and back water area. Due to the difficult geographical terrain, and jungle area, life of people in this region is hard. Moreover, the settlements can be reached mostly on foot. 

Every family has given its land for hydroelectric power to state government. Migration takes place mostly to Mumbai and other big cities for earning. Often, women have to shoulder the entire burden and responsibilities of the family. In many cases take care of a very small patch of land. 

Taking into consideration the need of the farming communities, Scope started Community Farming with the initiative of Women’s Groups.

Initially, we discussed this new idea with the groups. They received and welcomed the idea. We applied to the local government body for soil testing to find out which seed will best give product and be beneficial to all. The people were guided into studying the marketing and its strategy. Only after this we were able to decide on the seed selection quality. Women made time-bound plan of action for three month at least to get some economic support for their family. After three months each woman was able to earn Rs 1200/- from this community farming. There were 16 women participation in community farming project. 

SCOPE (Pune) OPENS REGIONAL RESOURCE CENTRE IN SATARA, JAVLI BLOCK @ MUNAVLE

On 13/01/09 SCOPE inaugurated new Regional Resources Centre of its Social Service in the Javali Block of Satra ditrict.

SCOPE began its visits to this area way back in 2004. After having earned the trust of the local Kunbi, Dalit, and Gavali-Dhangar communities, this year in January decided to officially open its branch.

From 11.30 am to 02. pm Agricultural officer from the Block office enumerated necessary knowledge and new schemes released by the government to the local people.

There after as the Sabhapati, Upsabhapati, Koyna Dam rehabilitation officer, Block development Officer as well as the Pump Engineering Services Proprietor-Mr. Alfie Monteiro from Pune, along with Mr. Anthony D'Souza aslo from Pune were present for this opening ceremony. The Sabhapati in the presence of other Government officials inaugurated the centre for Total Personality Development and the first ever village library in the Munavale village. This centre has about five

This centre will cater to the 30 villages in the vicinity along the backwaters of the Koyna dam.The programme began with the lighting of the lamp according to the Indian custom. The primary school girls sang a welcomed the guests with a song. The front of the house where the programme was organised was packed with past and the present Sarpanches and Gramsevaks, Women's Savings groups, Farmers Groups, from all the thirty villages made their present conspicuous. After the speeches and promise for cooperation from the Government Officials all sat for afternoon lunch which was provided from the contribution made by local people. With this the programme came to a grand finale.
